Travis Knight cuenta cómo Prime Video resignificó el destino de Masters of the Universe

There is something that the public understands about Masters of the Universe, and it is precisely that the theatrical window was never going to be the film's most important life. Travis Knight, the director who put his name and professional reputation behind this adaptation of the classic franchise, said it in those terms when talking about the way Amazon MGM Studios conceived the project: its life in streaming was much more important than its life in cinemas. For me, that phrase is more than a strategic declaration, because it puts on the table the central decision that shaped the entire release, and also the friction that marked the relationship between the filmmaker and the studio.

Theaters, in that context, were more like the first stop on a longer journey than the natural destination of the film. The premiere took place on June 5, 2026, with an event that included the transformation of the TCL Chinese Theatre into Grayskull Castle, a striking promotional gesture that demonstrated the enormous marketing machinery behind the production. The cast also included major figures such as Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man and Prince Adam, Jared Leto as Skeletor, Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms and Camila Mendes as Teela, but even with that level of investment, the box office did not accompany the expectations of a production that had a reported budget of 175 million dollars.

La apuesta digital desde el comienzo

Knight explained that this was not a later adjustment or a desperate change of strategy, but rather the way the studio conceived the project from the beginning. Amazon MGM Studios bet on the digital circuit and the plan was never fully aligned with what the creative team expected. When he joined the project, I understand that he did not fully grasp that approach, because the confidence placed in the creative team seemed to him to imply a stronger commitment to cinemas. The problem, as he sees it, was not a lack of faith in the material or in the people working on it, but a difference in the weight that each format was expected to carry.

“Su vida en el streaming era mucho más importante que su vida en los cines.”Travis Knight

The change of inflection arrived in late July, when the film landed on Prime Video. In its first week of availability in the United States, it accumulated approximately 1,170 million minutes watched, a figure that placed it among the most viewed launches on the platform. The numbers brought the conversation about a possible sequel back to the table. The same story that could not find its audience in traditional theaters achieved a much stronger connection with digital audiences in a very short time, and that contrast is, for Knight, the clearest lesson left by this experience.

Cines y plataformas: una tensión de toda la industria

Despite the distance with the studio's strategy, Knight said he reached an internal agreement with the outcome. What happened with the movie reflects, in his view, a tension that runs through the entire industry: the dispute between the traditional exhibition model and on-demand streaming consumption. I find it striking that a film with such an iconic universe, with an enormous promotional event and a cast that brought together names from different generations, ended up being installed in popular conversation by a platform rather than by the opening weekend in theaters.

And I do not think this necessarily means the death of the cinema, because there is still something decisive that only a darkened room, a screen and the collective reaction of a public can offer. What Masters of the Universe demonstrates is that, for some productions, the premiere can be a beginning rather than a finish, and that the distribution strategy can completely modify the meaning of success. The question, then, is not whether streaming is good or bad for the cinema, but whether the industry knows how to build both circuits without one of them being left as the second.

If you still want to watch Masters of the Universe, the film is available on Prime Video in the United States. The theatrical release took place on June 5, 2026, and the digital debut on the platform arrived in late July, with approximately 1,170 million minutes watched during the first week in that market.
